Confederate Colonel Hiram Hawkins was born in Bath County, Kentucky, September 1826. After the war, he located in Barbour County Alabama. Colonel Hiram Hawkins married for the second time, to a widow named Louisiana Boykin. She was a brilliant musician and artist. Colonel Hiram Hawkins became a prominent businessman in Eufaula.
Back in Civil War era, there was a law setup, if a widower remarried, and if he did not have blood children by his second wife, his estate went back to his children of his first wife. Louisiana's first husband, Francis A. Boykin, was also a widower. Louisiana and Francis had no children together. They adopted a child, Sallie, trying to get around the law. The loophole did not work. At the death of Mr. Francis A. Boykin, his estate went to his children of his first wife, leaving Louisiana and Sallie in the cold.
Louisiana married a widower Colonel Hiram Hawkins. Knowing her current situation, Colonel Hawkins set up an estate on Louisiana's behalf, which included the house at 333 W. Barbour St. in Eufaula Alabama. He put the house in her name. In keeping with tradition, it would be a safe assumption he built the house for her as a wedding gift. They were married September 21, 1864.
